Datuk Leong Mun Yee x DSA Diving Program
Diving is a visually stunning and acrobatic sport that requires skill, strength, and precision. The objective of diving is to execute a series of acrobatic maneuvers from a springboard or platform and enter the water with as little splash as possible. Divers are judged on the execution of their dives, including the degree of difficulty, the height achieved, the approach, the takeoff, and the entry into the water.
Diving can be performed from three different heights: 1-meter springboard, 3-meter springboard, and 10-meter platform. The 1-meter and 3-meter springboards require divers to execute a series of twists, flips, and turns in the air before entering the water. The 10-meter platform requires a higher degree of skill and courage, as divers must jump off the equivalent of a three-story building and execute their maneuvers before entering the water. Diving requires a great deal of athleticism, including strength, flexibility, and coordination. Successful divers must also possess mental toughness, as the pressure of performing under the spotlight can be intense. Despite the challenges, diving is a thrilling and rewarding sport that showcases the beauty and grace of human movement.
TYPES OF DIVES:
The different types of platform and springboard dives are classified into six groups. The first four groups involve rotating in different directions in relation to the board and the starting position, while the fifth group comprises of any dive with a twist. The final group is specific to platform diving and involves starting with an armstand.
The Forward Group includes dives where the diver faces the front of the board and rotates towards the water.
The Backward Group begins with the diver on the end of the board with their back to the water and rotates away from the board.
The Reverse Group involves the diver facing the front of the board and rotating towards the board, while the Inward Group has the diver standing on the end of the board with their back to the water and rotating towards the board or opposite of the Backward Group’s movement.
The Twisting Group includes any dive with a twist, with four types of twisting dives: forward, backward, reverse, and inward. This group includes more dives than any other due to the many possible combinations.
The Armstand Group is unique to platform diving, where the diver assumes a handstand position on the edge of the platform before executing the dive.
TYPES OF BODY POSITIONS:
When performing each type of dive, the diver uses one or more of the four different types of body positions. The Tuck position involves bending at the waist and knees with the thighs drawn to the chest while keeping the heels close to the buttocks.
The Pike position has straight legs with a bent waist, and the arm position is determined by the particular dive being performed or the diver’s choice.
The Straight position requires no bend at the waist or knees, though there may be an arch in the back depending on the dive.
The Free position is not an actual body position but an option for the diver to use any of the other three positions or a combination of them while performing a dive that includes somersaults and twists. In such dives, the Tuck position is rarely used, and a combination of the other two positions is the most common.
